Helping Our Valley Homeless

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires all counties to conduct a count every other year. Napa County carries out its count each year.  January 2024, Napa Valley had 415 individuals experiencing homelessness. According to an article in the Press Democrat, "This year’s count found the number of people sleeping in emergency shelters increased by 34% compared to 2023, demonstrating an expansion in shelter capacity. The number of unsheltered homeless residents dropped 42%, according to the release."

When visiting a homeless camp to offer support, it's important to bring items that address basic needs, promote dignity, and provide comfort. Here are ten of the best things to take:

1. Hygiene Kits

Include items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and hand sanitizer. Maintaining personal hygiene is crucial for health and self-esteem.

2. Non-Perishable Food

Pack nutritious, easy-to-prepare items such as granola bars, canned soups, peanut butter, nuts, dried fruits, and bottled water. These provide essential energy and sustenance.

3. Warm Clothing and Blankets

Provide items like thermal socks, gloves, hats, scarves, and lightweight blankets. Depending on the climate, additional warm clothing can help protect against the elements.

4. Reusable Water Bottles

Sturdy, reusable bottles encourage hydration and reduce reliance on single-use plastics. Look for bottles with built-in filters if possible.

5. First Aid Kits

Basic medical supplies such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary personal medications can address minor health issues and emergencies.

6. Durable Backpacks or Bags

A reliable backpack can help individuals carry their belongings securely and comfortably. Opt for bags with multiple compartments for better organization.

7. Hygiene Towels and Wet Wipes

Soft towels and wet wipes are useful for cleaning when access to showers is limited. They provide a sense of freshness and cleanliness.

8. Portable Phone Chargers

Power banks can keep phones charged, enabling individuals to stay connected with loved ones, access important information, and seek assistance when needed.

9. Socks and Underwear

New, clean socks and underwear are always in high demand and can significantly improve comfort and hygiene for those living without stable housing.

10. Gift Cards for Local Services

Provide gift cards for grocery stores, pharmacies, or laundromats. These offer flexibility and allow individuals to purchase exactly what they need.

11. Rain Gear

Durable reusable ponchos, gloves and wet/dry bags are incredibly useful in the cold wet winter months in Napa Valley.

Additional Tips:

  • Respect and Dignity: Approach giving with empathy and respect. Avoid making assumptions or judgments.
  • Local Regulations: Check any local guidelines or restrictions before distributing items to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Sustainability: Consider the environmental impact of the items you bring. Opt for reusable or eco-friendly products when possible.
  • Collaboration: Partner with local shelters, nonprofits, or community organizations to better understand the specific needs of the community you're assisting.

Bringing these thoughtful items can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, providing both immediate relief and long-term support.
